Books I loved, books I fought with

I don't do plot summaries dressed up as reviews. I'll tell you how a book felt, who I'd hand it to, and the bits that annoyed me โ€” because a review where everything is perfect is just an advert.

The Cheerleaders

Kara Thomas ยท YA mystery / thriller ยท 2018

4.5 / 5 Spoiler-free

Five girls from the same cheerleading squad died within a month of each other. Five years on, Monica finds a box of her dead sister's things in her stepdad's desk and starts pulling at a thread the whole town would rather she left alone. It's grief with a mystery wrapped round it, and it's excellent.

Reviews I'm still writing in my head

More on the way โ€” I read faster than I write.

How my star ratings work

  • 5 โ€” I will bring this up in unrelated conversations forever.
  • 4 โ€” Really good. One or two things I'd argue about.
  • 3 โ€” Enjoyed it, won't reread it.
  • 2 โ€” Finished out of stubbornness.
  • 1 โ€” We do not speak of it.

Why I put content warnings on everything

Because being surprised by a hard subject in a book you picked up for fun is genuinely horrible, and a two-line heads-up costs me nothing. They're never spoilers โ€” just a note on what's inside, so you can decide if today's the day.

If a book handles something badly, I'll say that too.
